About

Welcome to the piano studio of Caroline Hwangbo Kim, also known as Clifton Piano Studio! My passion is teaching piano and fostering a love of learning through music-making. I accept hard-working students and dedicated families to study towards reaching the highest levels of musicianship. My aim is to nurture the well-rounded, joyful pianist. I achieve this through creative, unique motivational inspirations and many rewarding performance opportunities. With the numerous demands in the students’ busy lives today, I strive to support a healthy, consistent balance in each child by encouraging the best daily practice schedule at home to be done with optimal focus and concentration. As a result, self-discipline carries over into all areas in their life.

The Approach.

In-person and virtual lessons are taught worldwide to all ages and all levels. I offer weekly, private piano lessons (spanning 30 minutes to 2 hours) which include written theory assignments and an in-house ear-training program. Group performance classes are an integral part of the studio. Students participate in recitals, festivals, and competitions held in-studio, locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally. The studio has offered workshops and masterclasses in various concentrations such as jazz and church-accompanying and band-leading from the keyboard. We love supporting the community through outreach and benefit concerts. We take field trips and engage in interesting music-related book clubs together. I remain active as adjudicator and coach in chamber music and ensembles. One of my greatest joys is guiding students who hold accompaniment roles in their schools and churches as they learn leadership skills and learn how to collaborate with others in their community, both as a peer and as a respectful apprentice/pupil. They find and apply relevance of music into their everyday life. Students are encouraged to experiment with and find ownership in improvising, composing, engineering, and producing music both acoustically and digitally. Most importantly, I strive to create a whole, thriving individual from the inside out who will carry with them a lifelong love of music and piano. Students have come from top area schools such as The Madeira School, Nysmith School for the Gifted, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, and Homeschools.  Students graduate from the studio building lasting friendships. Alumni have been accepted into the finest colleges and universities, many receiving music-based scholarships and passing AP-credit qualifications. Graduates from Clifton Piano Studio have pursued studies and careers spanning cosmetology, music, and music production to psychology, neuroscience, computer science, engineering, dentistry, orthodontics, and surgery.

The Studio.

Set in bucolic Clifton, just north of the historic town’s railroad tracks, Clifton Piano Studio is home to a beautifully-maintained 1974 Steinway Grand Piano Model L. Periodically, we also welcome a single manuel Franco-Flemish harpsichord from the award-winning builder Richard Kingston of North Carolina. Our one-of-a-kind studio serves as a unique recital venue, complete with a stage for both indoor and outdoor performances and for holding receptions. The dynamic space is conducive to collaborative jam sessions as well as for music production and recording.
